Fiber HDMI Cable Not Working? 4 Fast Checks Before You Return It

You bought a premium Active Optical (AOC) Fiber HDMI 2.1 cable to run 4K 120Hz across the room, plugged it in, and your TV says "No Signal" or flashes black every few seconds. Do not return the cable yet. In 9 out of 10 cases, the cable is physically working perfectly, but tripped over one of these four installation traps.

1

Check the Direction (The #1 Culprit)

Unlike traditional copper cords, fiber HDMI cables are strictly unidirectional. The connector heads contain optical transceivers:

[SOURCE / TX] → Must be plugged into PC / PS5 / Xbox
[DISPLAY / RX] → Must be plugged into TV / Monitor / Projector

If you plugged DISPLAY into your graphics card and SOURCE into your TV, it will display 100% black screen. Swap the ends and test immediately.

2

Turn On TV "Enhanced HDMI" or "Input Signal Plus"

Almost all 4K TVs ship from the factory in legacy HDMI 1.4 / 2.0 compatibility mode. High-speed 48 Gbps FRL signals will be rejected with "No Signal" until you manually enable full bandwidth on that specific port:

  • LG: Settings → Picture → HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour → Set to 4K.
  • Samsung: Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus.
  • Sony Bravia: Settings → Channels & Inputs → External Inputs → HDMI Signal Format → Enhanced format (VRR).
3

Connect the 5V USB Auxiliary Power Lead (15m–30m Runs)

Over runs of 50ft (15m) or longer, optical laser diodes require up to 250mA of current. The HDMI pin 18 standard only guarantees 55mA. If your graphics card or console cannot supply sufficient power, the laser transmitter browns out under heavy 4K 120Hz loads, causing screen blackouts every 5–10 minutes.

If your cable includes a small USB plug on the SOURCE connector, plug it into a nearby USB port or phone charger.

4

Verify Your TV's HDMI 2.1 120Hz Port

Many TVs only offer 1 or 2 high-speed HDMI 2.1 ports (usually labeled HDMI 3 / HDMI 4 with 4K@120Hz). HDMI 1 and 2 are frequently older HDMI 2.0 ports capped at 18 Gbps (4K 60Hz max). Plugging into the wrong port locks Windows and PS5 to 60Hz.

Still No Signal? The Cable May Be Defective or Kinked

If you verified the direction, TV port settings, and power, the internal glass fiber core may have fractured from excessive bend radius during pulling. Replace it with an officially certified, QR-tested cable:
